About This Artwork
From Cassatt's celebrated series of ten color prints inspired by Japanese woodblock techniques. The artist employs aquatint, drypoint, and soft ground etching to achieve subtle color gradations and linear grace. The elevated viewpoint and decorative patterning of the striped fabric demonstrate her assimilation of japonisme aesthetics. This print series represents a technical tour de force, as Cassatt personally supervised every stage of the complex printmaking process. The series was exhibited at Durand-Ruel's gallery in 1891 to critical acclaim.
